Abstract
Paraquat was developed as a herbicide in England in 1958. It is now sold as Gramoxone¢ç & Paraco¢ç in Korea. Acute paraquat poisoning is notorious for its fatal outcome. Even though many studies have focused on successful treatment modality, no standard treatment has been established so far. The authors analyzed 47 cases of paraquat intoxication who were treated with hemoperfusion in Seonam University Hospital from June 2000 to April 2003. In most patients, hypothermia, tachypnea, decreased in pH and PaCO2 with the increases in white blood cell count and anion gap were seen. Patients with fatal outcome showed significant increases in aspartate transferase, blood urea mitrogen and creatinine and decreases in amylase, along with increased plasma paraquat level.
